A Day of Discovery: OMAC & Fresh Gallery Otara's Team Day Out Experience

Last week, the team from Otara Music and Arts Centre (OMAC) & Fresh Gallery Otara embarked on a much-anticipated Team Day Out, where we had the opportunity to explore some of Auckland's rich cultural and artistic landmarks. It was a day filled with inspiration, history, art, and, of course, some delicious food!

First Stop: Studio One Toi Tū

We kicked off our journey at Studio One Toi Tū, where we were warmly welcomed by Siobhan. She gave us an insightful tour of the venue, sharing its history and walking us through the art exhibition on display. The creative energy in the space was palpable, as we also got to see the residence area and the pottery house. It was an excellent start to our day, providing a glimpse into the world of local artists and their creative processes.

Behind the Scenes at Auckland Museum

Our next stop was the Auckland Museum, where we had the privilege of going behind the scenes. For many of us, this was a highlight of the day. We explored the vast collection of Pasifika artifacts, including intricate tapa, beautifully crafted spears, and other precious treasures that hold cultural significance. Personally, this moment was incredibly moving, as I got to see and hold spears from my island—objects that my ancestors may have held in their hands. It was a powerful reminder of the deep connections we have to our history and heritage.

Lunch at La Porchetta Parnell

After a morning of exploration, we refueled at La Porchetta in Parnell. The relaxed setting gave us a chance to chat and reflect on the morning’s experiences. Some of the team enjoyed a selection of flavorful pasta dishes, while others savored classic wood-fired pizzas. The food was delicious, and it gave us the perfect break before heading to our next destination.

Exploring Art at Pah Homestead

Our final stop of the day was the Pah Homestead, where we checked out the current art exhibition. The historic venue combined with the contemporary artworks on display created a striking contrast. The exhibition was thought-provoking, sparking conversations among the team about the interpretations and the stories the artworks told. It was a fitting end to a day steeped in creativity and culture.

OMAC Team Reflections

Throughout the day, each of us walked away with unique takeaways. For some, it was the chance to witness Auckland’s artistic and cultural vibrancy firsthand, while others enjoyed the opportunity to connect with one another outside of the usual OMAC setting. For me, the highlight was the opportunity to connect with my heritage by holding artifacts from my island, reminding me of the profound connection we have to our ancestors.

Our Team Day Out was more than just a break from the usual routine at OMAC—it was an enriching experience that brought us closer as a team and deepened our appreciation for the cultural and artistic tapestry that surrounds us. It’s days like this that remind us of the importance of stepping out of the everyday and immersing ourselves in the creativity and history that shapes our world.
